TESTING AND TAGGING FAQS

DO I NEED TO TEST MY FLEXIBLE LEAD APPLIANCES? YES.

All employers have a duty of care to insure they are providing a safe working environment for their staff members. The OH&S Act as required by Worksafe Tasmania and Tasmanian OH&S Act 2004A are the current pieces of legislation that must be followed in regards to electrical appliance safety.

DO I NEED TO TEST ALL OF MY APPLIANCES?  NO

Items that are deemed to be fixed or of low risk of being damaged do not need to be tested.

WHAT DOES TESTING INVOLVE?  THE PROCESS  INVOLVES:

  • Visual Inspection: Firstly the appliance shall be checked to ensure that it is in good physical condition and there are no obvious signs of danger.
  • Electrical Testing: The appliance shall be tested with a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) to test for any unseen electrical faults.
  • Record Keeping: Once the appliance is tested a record of the appliance and the test outcomes as well as who tested it shall be made.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO TEST?

The testing interval depends on the environment in which the appliance is being used. The harsher the environment then the more likely the appliance is to be damaged, hence there is a requirement for a reduced time between testing. For a schedule of testing in many common environments. Refer to the Chart at the bottom for more details.

ARE YOUR TECHNICIANS QUALIFIED TO TEST MY APPLIANCES?

AS/NZS 3760, which is the relevant standard for safety checking of electrical appliances states that someone employed to do testing and tagging work of electrical appliances must be deemed “A competent person”. This competency may be gained through training, experience or a combination of both.

All of our technicians have obtained a TAFE statement in Safety Checking Electrical Appliances or an equivalent. They also gain experience through on the job training with other experienced technicians.
